TAYLOR SWIFT - SPEAK NOW
This pick actually surprised ME and I'm the one picking them! I start considering my Top 10 list as soon as the first CD of the year comes out. I have a calendar that I put all the upcoming releases on and to be honest, I knew for a long time that Taylor had a new CD coming out but I never for a minute thought it would make the Top 10. Boy, was I wrong about that.
You might remember back a week after the CD came out that Taylor came here to KFDI and was on the air with me for 45 minutes. When I had heard that the interview was a possibility I was kind of freaking out because I hadn't heard the CD yet! What if I hated it? There's one thing I am and that's honest so I was hoping and hoping I would like it - I didn't like it. I loved it. This CD is SO much more mature than her first two. The songs on this CD are songs that I can relate to and songs that my 18-year-old niece Caitlyn can relate to as well. They're well written songs and Taylor is an exceptional lyrcist. Exceptional. Like on "Speak Now', the title track, a song about sneaking in to your ex's wedding and "speaking now": "I sneak in and see your friends and her snotty little family all dressed in pastel, and she is yelling at a bridesmaid somewhere back inside a room wearing a gown shaped like a pastry". C'mon admit ladies, we've all had those thoughts.
I've heard people ask Taylor over and over who the songs are about - a good question because she makes it very obvious that she writes about things in her life. But if you know who the songs are about you can't put yourself in them and that's what makes a song relateable. These songs take you back...or a make you smile. Or even make you laugh because it does take an exceptional lyricist to rhyme actress with mattress. :) Forget who they're about...just enjoy them.
Taylor wrote every song on the CD - no co-writes - she WROTE every song herself. She also produced the CD so these are the songs she wanted you to hear. It's not someone else's interpretation of her music. This is a much more grown-up Taylor. This CD is not very country and certainly not one for the guys - this one is for the girls and now for the women too!
