As soon as I heard "Look it Up" the first single off Ashton's new CD "Where Country Grows", I KNEW I was going to love the CD. And I was not disappointed.
What I love about this CD is it's a country CD from a country female singer at a time where a lot of the female country singers really aren't all that country (outside of Miranda) and Ashton Shepherd is COUNTRY And this CD is filled with those traditional country themes - drinking and cheating where the women isn't the victim, she's strong enough to stand up to her cheatin' spouse. And she's a terrific songwriter writing or co-writing eight of the ten cuts on the CD.
I think the reason she has really taken off yet is some people are going to find her too "twangy" but that's what I love about her. She actually sings just like she talks, it's who she is and I love that she's not trying to be anyone else. Ashton isn't cookie cutter country - she's not trying to sound like anyone else and it really works. The CD has some real heartbreak, yet empowering songs like "I'm Good" (" I'm good and gettin' better at being my best" I love that line), songs that will make you smile like "More Cows Than People" and probably my favorite on the CD is "While It Ain't Rainin".
This is a great CD for those people who think that country isn't country anymore. Give it a listen - I think you'll love it.
