After 34 years here at KFDI, John Wright will be taking on a new challenge at KWCH. A new opportunity, a new adventure. There were a few days I thought in the back of my head "I need to talk him out of it" but I knew it was a great opportunity for him. Trust me, if I didn't think it was a chance for him to grow professionally and learn new things - I DEFINITELY would have tried to talk him out of it.
My heart is heavy today but all I can think of today, John's last day, is thank you.
Thank you for being my friend and making my life better. John is one of those people who make you a better person just by having him in your life.
He has changed lives. Hundreds of lives. Over the years, he has coached hundreds of kids. And so many of these kids are kids who needed someone like John in their lives. They needed a positive role model to step up and mentor them. And care about them. That's something he is committed to and will continue to be committed to. He helps them raise the money for uniforms, for travel and has even driven some of them to look at colleges - on his own dime. On behalf of all those kids, thank you.
John has saved lives. When I think about how many nights he got out of bed to cover severe weather, I have no idea what that number would be. In 34 years that has to be in the hundreds. I remember more than one night listening to severe coverage safe in my house and listening to John covering storms with his vehicle getting pummelled by hail and I was thinking "JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!! BE SAFE!!!!!!!!". He saved lives by reporting a tornado in Hesston. When we go away from the storms, John goes towards them. All to keep us safe. Thank you.
And thank you for being my friend and helping lift me up when I was having a bad day. Or laughing with me, or all the Party Days we had - which was nothing more than chips and salsa - but it always made us happy. Thank you.
Not only am I a better person for knowing John, THOUSANDS of people are better for knowing John.
Thank you for 34 years at the station and 12 years of being on the air with me. I appreciate every day we've had and I can't wait to find out what the future holds for you.
One of my friends posted this on my facebook page: "Because I knew you, I have been changed...for the good."
Amen to that.
