I have my blue shirt and some great memories of my time volunteering this past weekend at the Wichita Extreme Makeover Home for the Carl Hall family.
I was at the house in the early morning hours of Sunday morning, one of hundreds of people at the house.
I don't know what I expected when I volunteered, but it surpassed any expectation I had. I am classified as an "unskilled" worker. So, my job was mainly cleaning up for the skilled workers and keeping the build site, inside and out, clean and orderly.
Everyone was working together so well. Everyone knew their job and went about getting it done. I felt appreciated by everyone I was working with and around. We were all treated with great respect by the Bob Cook Homes staff, who were coordinating the entire process.
One other thing I noticed was how often the workers were talking about Carl Hall and his family. How much they would like the house and about how it was set up for Carl's wheelchair.
I highly recommend that anyone who can, go to the build site and either volunteer to work or be a spectator. You won't regret it.....even at 3am.
About the house
ABC TV is all about surprising the family so I don't want to spoil any of the more spectacular elements of the house by talking about them here. But, I'll tell you this. This house is one-of-a-kind. There's one room in the house that is over the top! But overall, it's just a well laid out home that any family would love to live in.
The house is located in a subdivision behind St. Peter's Catholic Church on Southwest Blvd. To get to the house, take 235 S. to the K42 exit/Southwest Blvd. Turn right off the exit and go past Maize Road. St. Peter's is just west of Maize on the north side of the road. The volunteer tent is behind the church. There will be plenty of volunteers to help you along the way.
The reveal is scheduled for between 3pm and 6pm on Thursday. That's when Ty Pennington will say those now famous words, "Driver Move That Bus" and the Hall family will see this magnificent house.
