The movie Titanic is one of the biggest movies of all time. The fictional legend of lovers Jack and Rose and their ill-fated affair have captured our imagination to the point where many of us just want to believe they were real.
There has been one question that I have asked about for the past 15 years. Yes, it was 15 years ago that Titanic came out. Hard to believe, huh? But, back to my question.
Why didn't Jack just hop on that floating door with Rose and survive too? Why, oh why? I know, it's fiction and the ending was written to make it all work out the way James Cameron wanted it to. But, let's just suppose for a minute that we could go back and see if Jack and Rose could have both survived.
Well, enter the Mythbusters. They had the same question as I did. And, they have a tv show with a budget that allowed them to finally, once and for all, answer the question: Could Jack have survived?
Below is the video. I don't want to spoil it for you....but if you want to know the answer before you watch the video (or instead of watching the video), scroll down.
Here's the spoiler:
Nope, Jack would not have survived if he had jumped on the giant floating door with Rose. It would have sank and they both would have died. And, that would have messed up the entire ending to the story. We needed Rose to throw the Heart Of The Ocean back down to the Titanic. There was one surprise in the Mythbusters' experiment though. They discovered that if Jack and Rose had found a way to secure her lifevest to the bottom of the door, it would have stayed afloat with both of them on board.
