Warning. President Obama is going to say something today that is going to sound wrong to you.
Most people in Kansas pronounce it Father Emil Kapaun (Kay-pun) but now we find out that is wrong. "It is kuh-PAHN, because that's the way my grandparents always said it, and that's how Father Emil always said his name," says nephew Ray Kapaun.
Thursday, when he gives the family of Father Kapaun the Medal Of Honor, President Obama will pronounce the name correctly.
Father Kapaun will be honored for his service as a military chaplain in the Korean War who chose to stay behind and care for a group of injured soldiers in enemy territory rather than retreat to safety. He died in a Korean prisoner-of-war camp in 1951.
