Taylor Swift was named the top country artist of 2011 by Billboard magazine on Friday (Dec. 9). Billboard adds up album sales, song downloads, ringtone downloads, social media activity and concert ticket sales to come up with their list of the top artists. Jason Aldean ranked second. Lady Antebellum came in third, while the Zac Brown Band, Blake Shelton, The Band Perry, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Chesney, Brad Paisley and Luke Bryan made up the rest of the top ten. Billboard gave the Eli Young Band honors for the top country song of 2011 with "Crazy Girl."
Nashville Scene Magazine has published the top songs we won't miss from 2011. They put Brad Paisley's "Old Alabama" on the list because they say it paints an unrealistic picture of women who are in the mood for love after hearing Alabama's music. They also have Justin Moore's "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away" on the list, saying, quote "This isn't a country song; it's murder by Kleenex." And, Toby Keith's "Red Solo Cup" was named as one of the songs to forget. Obvious reasons here. The song is about a plastic cup for goodness sakes. But you can't forget it. Once you hear it, it's stuck in your head. "Proceed to party."
Mindy McCready claimed on ABC's 20/20 Friday night that her 5 year old son, Zander, was beaten with a wooden spoon by his grandmother and guardian.Mindy says that was the reason she took her son and fled to Arkansas. And, the country singer disputes reports that she was discovered hiding in a closet with the boy. Mindy says she was sitting on a couch when police, in riot gear with assault rifles drawn, stormed a home where she was visiting. In an emergency hearing last week, an Arkansas judge refused to order the boy returned to Florida, where he had been living with his grandmother and Mindy's mother. Mindy says he plans to continue her fight for full custody of the child. She currently is pregnant with twins and living with her boyfriend in Arkansas.
