When you think "Christmas" or any sort of holiday gathering, you are also likely thinking about what sort of liquid "tolerance" will be needed to help you get through it. Lets face it, the in-laws or third cousins that make cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation look like a "smart and balanced" individual can be more than a hand full. So what are the best holiday cocktails to help you through the onslaught of "family time"? Here are some of my picks:
The way I make an old-fashioned is not exactly a classic preparation. It's how I learned to make it when I lived in Wisconsin (a state their drinks these things like they're going out of style), and that's how I make them to this day. Here's what you'll need to make each drink:
In a high ball glass muddle the following:
1 Sugar cube
1 orange slice
2-3 maraschino cherries
2-3 Dashes of bitters
Add in enough ice into the high ball glass to fill low ball glass and pour in:
2 Parts Southern Comfort (Or whiskey or brandy - I like Southern Comfort)
2-3 Parts 7up. Stir it all together and pour into a low ball glass.
Garnish with a cinnamon stick if you are feeling festive.
This is a great drink that combines some of the most popular flavors of the season and can look quite festive in a martini glass as well. Here's how I make mine:
2 Parts Vodka
1 Part Apple Pucker
1 Part Butter Scotch Schnapps
Put it all in a martini shaker with ice, shake it up and pour into a martini glass.
Make it really cool and rim the glass with caramel and garnish with a fresh apple slice.
Be warned, these go down VERY FAST. Too fast in fact.
So if there is someone at your holiday gathering whom you are one drink away from telling "what you really think of them", take it easy on these.
