A Mullinville man is in critical condition after the SUV he was driving ended up in the river.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said 83-year-old Charles Neelly was in a 2004 Ford Expedition on Kansas Highway 6, just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, three miles north of Arlington in Reno County.

Investigators said Neelly struck the right side of a guard rail. The SUV then traveled across the northbound lanes and went through the bridge railing and into the river.

Troopers said Neelly was first taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and later transported to Wesley Medical Center by ambulance. Neelly had his seatbelt on at the time of the accident.
