WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita fire crews worked quickly to put out a fire in northwest Wichita Sunday afternoon.
The fire was reported in the 9000 block of Westlawn around noon. Original reports were that someone may have been trapped inside, but firefighters did not find anyone inside the four-plex when they arrived.
Fire heavily damaged at least one unit in the building, with smoke damage to the other three units. The Red Cross was called to the scene to help assist 12 to 15 residents who were displaced. The fire caused $100,000 in damage.
Turner says one firefighter was taken to the hospital and several more were monitored for heat-related illnesses. Temperatures at the time of the fire were in the low 90s, with a heat index approaching 100 degrees.
A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
