BOE, service workers reach contract agreement
The Service Employees International Union - Local 513 will receive a 3.5 percent increase to its salary structure after coming to a tentative one-year contract agreement with the Wichita Public Schools Board of Education.
"For the past four years, our employees have gone without raises and most have assumed additional responsibilities as the district has made budget cuts," said Mary Whiteside, chief negotiator for the Board of Education, in a news release. "This agreement demonstrates that we value the work of all of our employees and we wanted to compensate them for the hard work they do for our students.”
The agreement also comes with a movement on the career ladder, affecting certificates, licenses and additional education.
A freeze on steps and longevity, relative to years of experience and service, continues, as well as no increase to the employee contribution to the health insurance premium. Details were also added for the Professional Dress Philosophy.
"We want to thank the Board of Education for our ability to work together to come up with an agreement, even in these tough economic times," said Harold Schlechtweg, chief negotiator for SEIU, in the release. "We know we have some rough financial situations ahead of us, and we are willing to do our share."
The union will give its final vote on July 14. BOE approval would come after.
