Sparkler bomb destroys curbside mailbox
A sparkler bomb placed in a curbside mailbox caused damage to a residence in the 2200 block of South Greenway Sunday night.
"Someone had devised what we would consider a sparkler bomb, which is placing common fireworks sparklers into a confined area and lighting them," said Wichita Police Lieutenant Doug Nolte. "The sparkler bomb blew apart the mailbox, causing it to strike the house and break some glass."
Police do not have any suspect information.
No one was hurt in the incident, but Nolte said the sparkler bombs have the capability of doing so.
"The explosive devices can not only maim, but kill people. We're very lucky that there wasn't someone close by that was hit by flying shrapnel."
