Uncle of four year-old Sterling girl admits to owning dog
The owner of a stray dog that attacked a four year-old girl in Hutchinson has been located.
Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said the owner of the dog turned out to be the uncle of Kailynn Hartman of Sterling. She was bitten around her neck. Henderson said Josiah Cauthorn was present when the girl was bitten. He was afraid of being charged with " Harboring a Dangerous Animal " so denied knowing where the dog came from. It delayed the investigation and possible treatment for 18 hours. The case will be classified as a dog bite. The Reno and Rice County Health Departments are working with Kailynn's family and law enforcement and state officials on this case. Cauthorn is cooperating with law enforcement and is only concerned about his niece's quick and complete recovery. The dog remains in quarantine due to possible rabies.

A Shepard-mix dog attacked a 4-year-old girl in Hutchinson Monday afternoon.
Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said Kailynn Hartman was playing in her uncle's yard in the 1600 block of West Blanchard when her uncle heard her scream. The uncle saw Hartman on the ground, pinned at the neck by a dog.
The uncle scared the dog off, but Hartman had to be transported to the hospital with a gash on her neck, as well as puncture marks from the dog's teeth.
The dog did not have a collar or any identifying information. Henderson said neighbors in the area said they had not seen the dog before.
Police are asking for the public's health in identifying the dog to help link it back to its owners.
