Wichita fire officials urging people to be careful with fireworks
With hot, dry and breezy weather continuing for the July 4th holiday, the Wichita Fire Department is urging residents to be careful with fireworks.
Fire marshall Brad Crisp presented safety tips at the beginning of Tuesday's city council meeting. He says people should keep fireworks away from grassy areas and away from homes and other structures, they should avoid lighting fireworks in strong winds, and it's a good idea to have a bucket of water or a garden hose ready in case of fire.
Crisp is also urging parents to supervise their children, and make sure that fireworks are used the way they're intended, placing them on the ground and not in a container. He also says people should only shoot fireworks that are purchased in Wichita, because fireworks from other areas may be illegal in the city.
A special number will be active from 4:30 p.m. Wednesday until 3 a.m. Thursday for fireworks complaints. Crisp says that number, 290-1011, is for reporting illegal fireworks, noise complaints and non-emergency situations.
