Thanks to quick actions by neighbors in the area, a mother and her three children, all under the age of 7, were able to escape a fire Wednesday evening.

The fire happened at 1325 East 10th Street, near 11th Street North and Cleveland.

"When fire crews first arrived, the front of the home was fully involved in flames and working into the second floor of the home."   Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Joe Bickel said.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the family.

The children were alseep upstairs. A fire investigator said discarded fireworks left in a trash can next to the home started the fire. Damage is estimated at around $120,000 dollars.

Crews were called back to the scene at least once Thursday morning to check on light smoke around the home.

The Wichita Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 1000 block of north Cleveland late Wednesday evening.

When the first crews arrived on scene, they noticed the north end of the home in flames. Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Joe Bickel said the fire did make its way into the second floor of the home before crews were able to knock it down.

A mother and her three young children, ages 7, 5 and 2, were able to exit the structure unharmed thanks to neighbors pounding on the structure to alert them of the fire.

Damage is estimated to be around $120,000 and investigators are still working to find a cause, but they believe the fire started on the exterior of the home.

The Red Cross has been called in to the assist the family.
