Meade County jailer recovers from inmate attack
Three inmates who escaped briefly are back in custody due to quick response by area law enforcement and the public in Meade County.
Sheriff Mark Miller said the inmates overpowered a guard, who had been cleaning a cell at about 10 p.m. Wednesday. The guard was beaten, stomped and kicked. Miller said the inmates took the jailer's keys.
The guard was flown to a Wichita hospital, where he's expected to recover from his injuries. One of the inmates who stole a pickup truck was later caught near Bucklin, while two other escapees were caught north of Meade.
One escapee led officers on a brief chase. Miller said the incident will be reviewed by Ford County detectives.
"The inmates did not have a chance to become armed and dangerous. I was only concerned about the safety of the public and getting the inmates back in custody," Miller said.
