Man takes drastic measures to avoid arrest
Wichita Police say a man jumped into a pond Thursday night to avoid being arrested after a brief chase. It began around 11 o'clock Thursday night when an officer tried to stop the suspect driving a Chrysler Seebring in east Wichita.
Wichita Police Lt. Jose Salcido said at the scene that the suspect took off, leading officers on a brief chase. The chase ended when the suspect crashed into the south ditch at 143rd Street East and Kellogg.
The man ran on foot to the backyard of a nearby home. Salcido said as officers closed in on the suspect he jumped into a nearby pond.
Police, Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol and a Haysville officer set up a perimeter around the pond. Lt. Salcido said the man swam around the pond for about 20 minutes before he was taken into custody.
Salcido said he believed the suspect may have had a revoked license which may be why he decided to try to get away. "All things considered, to put all these people on the highway in peril to get away from us on that charge, seems rather silly," said Lt. Salcido.
the Lieutenant said the suspect did have an extensive traffic record, but nothing else was found in the vehicle and there was nothing in his record significant enough that seemed to justify him trying to get away.
