Wichita man dies in high-speed crash
A Wichita man in his earlier 20s is dead following a crash early Saturday morning in West Wichita.
Wichita Police Sergeant Jim Merrick said it happened around 2 a.m. at Irving and Young Street, near Kellogg and West Street.
Merrick said the man was driving a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup truck westbound on Irving when he went left of center and collided nearly head-on with a flatbed semitruck trailer parked on the south side of the street.
Merrick said the driver was killed instantly. The passenger was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The driver's side of the pickup truck took the brunt of the damage from the impact, according to Merrick. Police are still investigating, but say alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Merrick said the truck was traveling at high speed prior to the crash and the force of the impact moved the trailer, which weighs several tons, at least 8 feet from where it was originally parked.
