Four young children suffered minor injuries after taking a car for a joyride and crashing into a building next to a home early Monday morning.

Wichita Police Sgt. Rick Moscicki said it happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. at Rutgers and Sterling near the New Market Square shopping complex.

The children, ages 10-13, took an older relative's Acura, and had been driving around the area for about an hour before the crash. Sgt. Moscicki said at one point, the 13-year-old who was driving lost control and struck a hydrant at 60 mph before striking a large shed that is used as a personal wood shop.

The car penetrated several feet into the building, breaking through brick and siding. The four children were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

Wichita Police have contacted the parents of the children. The Wichita Fire Department sent several crews to the scene to assess how best to remove the car to prevent any further damage to the structure.
