Maintenance man remains in critical condition after accident
A 66-year-old maintenance man for Fox Run Apartments in southeast Wichita remains in critical condition with skull fractures after he fell from the back of a moving pickup truck.
The accident happened at about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 9200 block of East Bedell.
The man fell as a 51-year-old co-worker accelerated.
Police Lt. Joe Schroeder says it is illegal for anyone to ride in the back of a pickup within the Wichita city limits, but there are some acceptions to the ordinance for workers who need to for their jobs.
"In this case we'll have to look at it and see if it was really necessary for them to ride in the back of a truck as part of their duties, and that will be part of the investigation," Schroeder said.
The city ordinance is more restrictive than the state law, which prohibits anyone under the age of 14 from riding in the back of pickups.
The name of the victim in Tuesday's accident was not released.
