Wichita packs a punch in National Guns N' Hoses tourney
The Wichita Crime Commission's Guns N' Hoses event this past April sold out three days before the show.
The success caught the eye of the promoter who runs the national tournament in St. Louis.
"He was so impressed with our event that he invited Guns N' Hoses Wichita boxers to take part in the national invitational Guns N' Hoses tournament," said Wichita Crime Commission Executive Director Gordon Bassham. "There will be boxers from Louisiana, Kansas, Missouri, New York state and Illinois taking part in this national invitational Guns N' Hoses tournament"
The River City Rumble pits emergency personnel against fellow responders in the boxing ring. Wichita will have six combatants:
- 150 pounds - Trina Grimes, Wichita vs. Rhonda Shanika, Missouri State Highway Patrol
- 220 pounds - Justin Maxfield, Wichita vs. Travis Tilton, Sugar Creek Fire Protection District
- 230 pounds - John Gill, Wichita vs. Tracy Guiterrez, New York
- 205 pounds - Abe Kersting, Wichita vs. Sam Wilson, Herculaneum Fire Department
- 205 pounds - Dal Gains, Wichita vs. Luke Propst, Hermatite Fire Department
- 185 pounds - Ben Kersting, Wichita vs. Dennis Burgos, New York
Basham said the Wichita roster packs a punch.
"Considering the fact that all of our boxers have been trained by Randy Cole, a lieutenant in the Sheriff's Office who himself was a former professional and amateur boxer, I expect that we're going to definitely have some wins on the card," Basham said.
The event is paid for by the promoter in St. Louis. It will be held Friday at The Family Arena in St. Louis.
"It's going to be a really fine, fine event," Basham said. "We should also learn quite a bit from this promoter that will help us out with our Guns N' Hoses event next April."
