Wichita Police placed four children in protective custody and a 72-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in serious condition after officers found poor living conditions at a home in the northeast part of the city.

Lieutenant Doug Nolte said the home was in the general area of 9th and Grove. He said EMS crews contacted police after they were called to the home to check on the woman. She was found to have a number of insect bites.

Nolte said there was no air conditioning, and there were insects and trash throughout the home.

The Exploited and Missing Child Unit is looking into the situation, and detectives are talking with the woman's 37-year-old daughter and 35-year-old son-in-law to determine if the family needed help and just didn't know where to go, or if there were criminal issues involved.
