The Wichita Fire Department responded to a house fire Saturday afternoon near 1st and Grove in central Wichita.

Fire crews on the scene noted heavy fire and smoke billowing from the home. A smoke plume from the fire could be seen across most of Central Wichita for a short time.

The fire was mostly contained to the front and middle portions of the home, allowing firefighters to access the fire from the rear of the home. However, the flames had penetrated other levels of the home, including the attic, forcing firefighters to fight the blaze from a defensive position.

There was some concern about winds perhaps sending embers from the residence to other homes nearby.

"We were lucky that the winds cooperated enough to prevent exposure to other homes," said Battalion Chief John Turner.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and total damage to the home is estimated at $100,000. Nobody was at home at the time of the fire.
