Camp creates bond between law enforcement, youth
The Leader, Achievers and Winners Law Camp, held July 17-20, is meant to build a positive bond between law enforcement and youth.
The purpose is to provide role models and to build self-esteem, confidence and trust in participants.
"The partnership and long-term commitment from our community partners is invaluable and shows how important law camp is to the youth in this area," said Sedgwick County Sheriff Bob Hinshaw.
The event, entering its 17th year, will begin at noon on Tuesday and run through noon Friday at Lake Afton County Park. The event will host 150 kids ages 11-15.
Kids will participate in a martial arts demonstration, wall climbing, fishing, swimming and more. Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer will host a barbecue for the kids on Thursday night.
It is put on by the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Army National Guard, Wichita Crime Commission and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Sedgwick County.
