Wichita City Council receives final budget proposal
Wichita City Manager Robert Layton's proposed budget for the coming fiscal year contains increases in fees, but no change in the mill levy.
Layton presented his $533 million final budget proposal during Tuesday's meeting of the Wichita City Council. Some of the fees that would be affected include a $1 convenience payment charge for people who use credit cards to pay for fines and other fees, increased fees for some fire inspections, court program fees and possibly an increase in parking rates at metered spaces.
The budget calls for the loss of some employment positions, but not through layoffs.
"Almost all of those are vacant, but where there are incumbents in the positions, we'll be able to place those individuals in the organization," Layton told council members. "Hopefully, no one will lose a job with the city as a result of your actions on the budget."
Public meetings on the budget are scheduled for the next four weeks before the city council's scheduled adoption on August 14.
