Two arrested after dangerous police chase
Wichita Police say three young girls who were playing in a wading pool in the 700 block of North Illinois were nearly struck by a car that was involved in a chase.
Officers attempted to stop the 2007 Ford Focus at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday for a minor traffic violation. When the vehicle's 24-year-old driver failed to stop, officers determined the license plate did not belong on the vehicle.
During the chase, officers saw the driver toss a black, semi-automatic handgun out of the window. Officers were able to secure the weapon.
When the chase passed through the 700 block of North Illinois, the Ford drove up onto a lawn and came within four feet of striking the girls in the wading pool. The vehicle continued to the back yard of a duplex, where both occupants of the vehicle fled on foot.
"We were very fortunate that the driver of that vehicle that was evading us did not hit those kids," said Police Lt. Doug Nolte.
Officers later arrested the driver and his 24-year-old female passenger. A follow-up investigation turned up some marijuana inside the home where the suspects ran.
Both were booked into jail on multiple counts.
