KU Med asks Wichita businesses to track waste
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The University of Kansas School of Medicine has an unusual request for businesses.
The school's Wichita campus wants to sort through their trash as part of a project aimed at reducing the amount of waste going to landfills. The trash assessments are free and take about an hour to complete.
The Wichita Eagle reported that funding for the program comes through an Environmental Protection Agency cooperative agreement. Participating businesses face no addition regulations but can receive recognition for reducing their waste.
School officials say they had an assessment performed on the school last summer and a follow-up assessment performed this spring. The initial assessment showed that 85 percent of the materials it placed in the trash could have been recycled.
