An 1-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool in the backyard of a home at 5636 East Coe Drive just before noon.

"Officers arrived at the scene and found a male victim, one year of age, who had been pulled from the family pool by an 18-year-old family member," said Wichita Police Capt. Hassan Ramzah.

Ramzah said the child died shortly after arrival at Wesley Medical Center.

The boy's mother was the 18-year-old woman who pulled him from the water.

"She was notified by one of the children in the house," Ramzah said.

There was at least six children at the home, Ramzah said.

This afternoon police said the boy apparently got into the pool while everyone in the house was asleep.
