A Wichita police bomb squad removed a homemade explosive device from the front yard of a home in the south part of the city on Wednesday.  The device was found shortly before 5:30 p.m. by a 44-year-old woman who was visiting her mother in the 1400 block of South Main.

Officers blocked streets in the area, and an explosive technican was called to the scene.  Lieutenant Doug Nolte said the device was made of shotgun pellets and shotgun powder mixed together.  He said the device would have caused significant damage or injuries.

A bomb squad removed the device and rendered it harmless.  Nolte said there are no suspects, and it's not clear how the device got there, but it's not believed that the house on South Main was the intended target.

Anyone with information on the device is urged to call 911.
