A Wichita man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault after a shot was fired from a passing car at an off-duty Wichita police officer.

The officer nor his vehicle were hit by gun fire.

It happened just before 4 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes on I-235 near Meridian. The officer called 911 to get assistance from area law enforcement.

"The officer noticed the suspect prior to this incident, because he was driving erratically and playing loud music." Wichita Police Lt. Joe Schroeder said.

A 27-year-old man was found hiding in a field near Haysville. That's where he ditched the car.

"The officer and suspect did not apparently know each other," Schroeder said.
