Kansas' first black Olympian to be honored today
A ceremony will be held this morning to honor the first black Kansan to participate in the Olympics.
Solomon Butler grew up in Hutchinson, where he excelled in football and track and field before going to Dubuque University in Iowa.
He competed in the 1920 Olympics held in Belgium, and played in the National Football League. Butler passed away in 1954 and was laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery next to his sisters.
A ceremony honoring Butler will take place at 10 a.m. at the cemetery, located at 1000 North Hillside.
