That sound you heard was a big sigh of relief  from the parents of a Wichita Trinity Academy student who got a $10,000 scholarship to attend Wichita State University.

Thomas Dieker plans to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering, with a goal of becoming a test pilot for one of the aircraft producers in Wichita. It is part of a $200,000 gift from Mel Hambelton Ford.

Dieker said he had applied for a different scholarship, but was surpised to learn his advisor had entered him in the Mel Hambelton scholarship.

"This was a last minute thing, " Dieker said. "Mel Hambelton Ford came to the admissions rep and asked if you have anybody that would be good for this? Amy Nichols, my admissions rep, said yes, I have Thomas.

"I was smiling. I was excited to learn I won."

He wlll receive a $2,500 scholarship annually for a total of $10,000 for four years. The new Mel Hambelton Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to students enrolled full time at WSU. Recipients must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
