If you have an extra $2,000 just laying around, Inter-Faith Inn Shelter officials could use it to build a new playground for homeless children in Wichita.

So far, $8,300 has been raised, but more is needed for repairs at the playground near Broadway and Central.

"It will be used to repair a fence and (broken) gate at the shelter," Project Coordinator Kathleen Webb said.

The privacy fence around the play area has broken boards that expose children to onlookers served by the Lord's Diner.

"We've raised enough money to completely gut it, replace boards, everything, but we just need this last push of money," said Webb.

The ground cover of shredded tires to protect the children from various injury were made from steel belted tires. Over time, metal slivers have surfaced that cut hands and knees. Aside from poor conditions, the children at the shelter still play there.
