Fire damages home east of Derby Sunday
It took Sedgwick County firefighters nearly four hours to put out a fire inside of a modular home east of Derby.
It happened Sunday afternoon in the 13900 block of east 79th Street South.
Sedgwick County Fire Division Chief Ed Presnell said the homeowners were working in an apartment above their garage when one returned to their home to find smoke. When firefighters arrived on scene, they discovered a fire burning in the basement that they were able to quickly put out.
Presnell said they later discovered the fire had spread to the first floor and attic of the modular home. Crews spent several hours pulling down ceiling and walls to get to all the areas in which the fire had spread.
Firefighters rescued many of the homeowner's pet birds. However, 15 died from smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Presnell estimates damage at $40,000.
