As the Wichita City Council voted to adopt a budget for city operations in 2013, City Manager Robert Layton announced that some funding would be provided for the Old Cowtown Museum to offset a cut in funding.

Layton told the council that $30,000 in guest tax revenues would be provided to the museum, reducing an expected cut from $80,000 to $50,000. Layton also said the city would be involved in discussions with the Cowtown board about future funding and operations of the museum.

Mayor Carl Brewer talked about the importance of Cowtown for the community. He said city staff will be working with the museum to figure out how to make it work for the future. He said the city wants to grow Cowtown and make it a strong tourist attraction.

Cowtown Board Chairman David Crockett said he's excited about further discussions with the city, but said better communication is needed between the city and the museum. He said a $50,000 cut is better than the original cut of $100,000 that was proposed, but the museum is still not happy with the cut.

The council voted to adopt a budget of $533 million for the 2013 budget year. For the 19th year in a row, the budget does not increase the city's property tax levy. City Manager Robert Layton said a staff reorganization will continue, along with a review of the vacant positions in the city.
