Wichita, Sedgwick County looking to merge inspection services
The Wichita city council has approved a resolution setting out a policy for the merger of the city's Office of Central Inspection with Segwick County's code enforcement department. City and county staff members have been talking about the merger over the past year.
A similar resolution is on the agenda for Wednesday's meeting of Sedgwick County commissioners. It calls for the creation of the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department.
County manager Bill Buchanan says there are still details to be worked out, including a location for the new department and the choice of a director. The new department should be in place by January 1, 2013.
Lonny Wright, who serves on a mechanical trade advisory council for the city, said the change will be fair for citizens, city and county employees, and for contractors. He said citizens should not notice any changes with regard to inspections and code enforcement issues.
