The Better Business Bureau is warning Wichitans about scammers calling to tell residents their computer has a virus.

The BBB said a company called Global Server PC Repair 247 are telling consumers the computer has a virus, and they need to log into it to remove it. The scammers then ask for the username and password, or to go to a website that will let them access the computer to resolve the problem.

The scammers can trick people into installing malicious software that can collect banking usernames and passwords. They also could adjust settings to make the computer vulnerable, request credit card data to bill users for phony services or direct consumers to fraudulent websites.

The bureau said it has received many calls from consumers on the scam - including some victims. The BBB advises to not purchase any software or service, hang up if a fee or subscription is included and to report the caller's information to authorities.

The scammers may also identify themselves as Microsoft Windows Technical Coordinators.
