It has been a major concern for weeks due to extended drought conditions.

Another large grass fire broke out just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday near Derby. Firefighters were sent to 83rd Street South between Webb Road and Bluff to battle a grass fire.

The National Weather Service had placed a high grassland alert for fire damage mostly west of I-135 in their dry weather outlook.

A Wichita-Sedgwick County 911 Dispatcher told KFDI the flames consumed 40 acres near 87th St. S. along the river. No one was hurt. She said there were some trees lost, but no property damage.

Fire departments from Derby, Mulvane and Sedgwick County responded to the scene. Crews remain in the area watching for hot spots.
