8-year-old killed by stray bullet
An 8-year-old child is dead after being struck by a stray bullet.
It happened shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday at the Oaks Mobile Home Park, located at 3041 S. Broadway in Wichita.
Wichita Police Lt. Todd Ojile said there was a confrontation between four people and a man in a car at an apartment. One of the men fired gun shots at the car as it sped through a mobile home park. Stray bullets hit two mobile homes.
Ojile said officers found a bullet hole in one mobile home. They woke a woman inside, then they discovered that an 8-year-old girl had been struck in the head as she was sleeping.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 4-year-old sister and 6-year-old brother were in the same room, but they were not hit.
In another mobile home, a 46-year-old woman had a graze wound to her head as she was watching television. She was treated and released at a hospital.
Police took four people from the apartment into custody. It is believed one of them is the gunman. Officers are also looking for a black, 2011 Ford Focus with a Kansas license tag of 511-EVP. Ojile said the man who was driving the car is not the owner, and police are treating it as a stolen car.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call the homicide division at 268-4181, or Crime Stoppers at 267-2111.
This is Wichita's 17th homicide of the year.
