Officer fires shots at suspicious person
For the ninth time this year, Wichita Police officers have fired their weapons in the line of duty. The latest instance came shortly before midnight in the 2800 block of west Pawnee.
Wichita Police Sergeant Brian Sigman tells KFDI News that the officer was working on paperwork when he saw a person peering around the building at him. The officer started paying attention and the person peered around the building a second time with what appeared to be a rifle.
When the person raised the rifle toward the officer, the officer opened fire and engaged in a short foot pursuit. Police Captain Brent Allred told reporters later that the shots from the officer struck at least two buildings, but no one was hit and there was no evidence that the suspicious person was hit.
Allred also said there was no indication that the unknown person fired at the officer.
Sigman said canine and police combed the area for almost an hour and a half looking for the person, but did not find them.
Per department policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
