Thieves make off with jewels from Towne West Square
Wichita police are looking over video evidence for clues about a jewel heist that took place early Thursday morning at Towne West Square mall.
Two men showed up at the mall around 7a.m. when a security guard was unlocking doors to allow exercise walkers inside. One of the men was pushing a dolly.
The men went straight to a kiosk store called Towne West Jewelers, broke into a display door and removed a small, black safe, about the size of a personal refrigerator. They used the dolly to wheel the safe outside.
"They entered a black, Chevy 4-door," said Wichita Police Lt. Doug Nolte. "Both of them loaded the safe into the car and drove off."
Police only have a vague description of the jewel thieves. They're African-American males, possibly in their 20s, wearing hooded sweatshirts. No one was able to get a license number from the car.
It wasn't immediately clear when the heist was discovered.
