A 15-year-old runaway girl fought with Wichita police officers who were sent to check on her Wednesday evening.

An out-of-state relative called Wichita authorities after receiving electronic pictures of the girl cutting herself.

When officers met up with the girl at an apartment, she fought hard enough to knock equipment out of a male officer's belt and she tried to jump off a third story balcony to escape. Later, when she was being transported to a hospital by ambulance, she broke loose from some restraints and tried to jump out of the moving vehicle on I-135. The teenager was stopped by an EMS lieutenant who tackled her.

"We appreciate the fact that we do have people who are willing to get involved," said Wichita Police Lt. Doug Nolte, who said the telephone call may have saved the troubled girl's life.

The girl was eventually checked into Via Christi Hospital on East Harry.
