GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) The Fourth of July fireworks show in Great Bend will go on after all in late September.

The Associated Press reports the show will be staged the night of Sept. 22, following a day of World War II reenactments and a military tribute at the Great Bend Airport Airfest.

Great Bend was among many towns in drought-stricken Kansas that decided not to risk fireworks on July 4. The area remains dry, but Fire Chief Mike Napolitano gave the green light for the Sept. 22 show.

The airport sits next to farm fields, but Napolitano says the farmer wants the show to go on. He's clearing parts of his land to create firebreaks, and the city will wet down the grounds and have two fire trucks on hand.
