Police may have caught tire slasher
An observant resident may have helped police catch the person responsible for more than 30 tire slashings in the last month.
Wichita Police Sergeant Bart Brunscheen says a man witnessed a heavyset, African-American female crouch down next to his vehicle in the 700 block of south Mission shortly before 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
When he approached his vehicle, he noticed the tire going flat and the woman walking away. Brunscheen says that the man got within 10 feet of the woman before she threatened him with the knife. The man then yelled out "tire slasher, tire slasher," and two more neighbors came out and began pursuit of the woman. The woman pulled the knife on one of the two neighbors, causing them to back off to a safer distance.
Soon after, the woman was apprehended by police. Brunscheen says that the knife was recovered and contains an oily residue on it that came from a new tire.
Brunscheen says that the tire and knife will be taken to the CSI lab to be matched up with others as detectives work to link the woman to other slashings in the area.
