Kelly Elementary to get additions, renovations
Kelly Elementary will receive more than $1.5 million in additions and renovations after a bond proposal was approved by the Wichita Public Schools Board of Education.
The school, located near Glen Ave. and 31st Street South, will add a new cafeteria and kitchen area, as well as an addition for a larger administration area.
Several other parts of the building will be remodeled.
"We'll construct a new corridor that links the round building with the new cafeteria and kitchen," said Kenton Cox of Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey Architecture.
A stage in what used to be the gymnasium will also be removed.
"The media center in that building was the original gym," Cox said. "We did a little bit of work in the last bond issue, but very inadequate for the needs of the building."
Restrooms will also be renovated for more functionality. Three Kindergarten classrooms will have restrooms added.
The project was originally bid out in the spring, but estimates came back too far over budget. After design changes, the current bid was only slightly over the proposed budget.
The project is expected to be completed in August. Kelly Elementary was built in 1957.
