Soldiers names added to Sept. 11 monument in Kansas
FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) The names of 16 soldiers are now part of a monument near Fort Riley's Cavalry Parade Field after a ceremony to mark the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The ceremony was held Tuesday by the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley. The names joined those of 188 soldiers on the Global War on Terrorism Monument at the northeast Kansas Army post.
The annual event pays tribute to the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the attacks on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, as well as the thousands of soldiers who have been killed or wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Brig. Gen. Don MacWillie, senior commander of Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division, said the attacks united the United State around a cause, rather than fear.
