Groundbreaking moves inside for new airport terminal
The rain didn't spoil the atmosphere at a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for a new, $101.5 million terminal at Wichita's Mid Continent Airport.
The project is called Air Capital Terminal 3, or ACT 3. Officials have set an expected completion date for early 2015. Plans for the project began in 2001 when federal officials found the old terminal did not meet security specifications after 9/11.
A federal grant of $53 million is a major part of financing for the terminal, which will also get funding from user fees.
"This is probably the largest project that many of us will see in our lifetimes," said Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer.
Go Wichita Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Susie Santo said the airport terminal will create good a first impression that will help the city attract more meetings and conventions.
"It's those convention attendees who stay in our hotels, who shop in our shops, who dine in our restaurants and visit our attractions," Santo said.
