A young Wichita man was shot during a home robbery Tuesday morning.

Two men - one with a shotgun and one with a rifle - entered a residence in the 2200 block of South Fountain around 5:30 a.m. through a garage door. Inside, they confronted a 17-year-old man living in the garage that had been converted into a bedroom.

The suspects took the man inside the home, where they encountered his older brother.

"When that individual, who was 19 or 20 years of age, refused to comply with the robbers demands, they did fire one round from the rifle, striking him in the lower abdomen," said Wichita Police Lt. Joe Schroeder.

The suspects left on foot going south on Broadview. They took a TV.

"The only description we have at this point are two young black males described as being in their late teens - about 5-feet-8, medium build," Schroeder said. "One of them was wearing a white hoodie with the hood pulled all the way up. There is no further description on the second individual."

The older brother was taken to Wesley Medical Center. Schroeder said he is expected to recover.

A third brother was home at the time of the robbery, and came out of his bedroom during the commotion. Their mother was not home at the time.

Schroeder said he did not know if the residence was targeted for a reason.
