A 20-year-old woman saw something that didn't look quite right at 4:20 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Mt. Vernon and Beech in southeast Wichita - a toddler, in his Sponge Bob pajamas, walking on the sidewalk.

The woman stopped and called 911.

"When this Good Samaritan asked name and address, the child was unable to provide any real information to say where he had come from," said Wichita Police Lt. Doug Nolte.

Police knocked on some doors in the neighborhood, but found no one who could identify the boy. Finally, at 9 a.m., the owner of a child care facility called 911 to report the missing boy.

"This child was staying at a daycare provider that was providing overnight care because the parent of the child worked overnight," Nolte said.

It appeared the boy simply got up in the middle of the night and wandered out the back door. The Exploited and Missing Child Unit is investigating the case, but officers did not suspect foul play.

Nolte said the incident is a good reminder to parents of small children to place locks on their doors that are too high for youngsters to reach.
