A hostage situation in Pittsburgh today has been playing out, in part, on Facebook -- before the suspect's profile page was shut down.

The armed man with a military background took a hostage inside a downtown office building -- and posted Facebook updates saying he had ``lost everything.''  The man police identified as the hostage-taker -- Klein Michael Thaxton -- wrote that people will never have to worry about him again. His friends responded to the Facebook postings by urging him to end the situation peacefully. One asked him to think of his mother.

Police say the man has been calm and cooperative. They say he took a man hostage this morning inside the office of a benefits administration firm on the 16th floor of the high-rise. It's not clear what led him to target the company. Police say they brought the suspect's mother to the office building and put her in touch with Thaxton. She left the building shortly after 1 p.m., telling reporters that she hoped her son would get the help he needed.
